Lifetime achievement award for pioneering role and lifelong efforts in teaching and training general surgery and effectively expanding healthcare landscape of Chittagong by establishing Chattagram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital and Medical College

Professor ASM Fazlul Karim, know lovingly to CMC community as F Karim Sir, has been the stalwart of Surgery training and surgery education in Chittagong Medical College and is the mentor of majority of Chittagong Medical college alumni who are practicing surgery around the world today. Professor F Karim served Chittagong Medical College as a Professor of Surgery and Head of the department of Surgery for a long stretch before moving to Dhaka Medical College as the professor of Surgery. He also served Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College as the Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery.

Professor Karim Graduated from Dhaka Medical College in 1957; he obtained FRCS from Edinburgh in 1966 and FCPS (Surgery) from Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1974. He is also a fellow of International College of Surgery of USA and led its Bangladesh chapter.

During his distinguished professional career Professor Karim also served in numerous leadership roles including the founding president of Chittagong Medical College teachers’ association, President of Chittagong BMA, Vice president of central BMA, President of Society of Surgeons’ of Bangladesh, president, International College of Surgeons, Bangladesh chapter, President Rotary Club of Chittagong etc.

In addition to his pioneering role as a surgeon, Professor Karim’s contribution to the healthcare of the people of Chittagong, esp. the women and children is awe inspiring and unparalleled! The Chattogram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital and Medical college, established by him, has become a behemoth of healthcare in Chittagong and now serving hundreds of thousands of Chittagong residents each year.

Professor Karim has been recognized by many organizations for his contributions to his profession as well as the society. He received highest recognition award of Rotary International, ‘Service Above Self’. He has also received lifetime achievement awards from the Society of Surgeons, Rotary Club and many other organizations. In 2011, he received UNESCO award. He also received gold medal and note of recognition from many organizations including Chittagong City corporation, Lions Club, Rotary Club etc.
